Tiger Woods Sinks A Long Putt To Propel Him Back To The Top Of The World Rankings

Just moments after Ricky Fowler sank a long putt on the 12th hole to pull within two shots of the lead in the final round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Tiger Woods answered with his own long clutch putt.

The putt pushed Tiger's lead back to three with just six holes remaining.

He went on to win by two after Fowler melted down. And more importantly, he became the world's top-ranked golfer for the first time since 2010.

Here's the putt (via The Golf Channel)...

Meet The Caddie Who Quit His Job And Went To Work For Tiger Woods At His Absolute Low Point

$

joe lacava tiger woods caddie

Joe LaCava might be the smartest man in golf.

In May 2011 LaCava was hired by 25-year-old Dustin Johnson. Johnson was widely regarded as America's Next Great Golfer, and it seemed like an ideal gig for the veteran caddie.

That summer Johnson won the Barclays and finished in the top 10 three times (including a second-place finish at the British Open), and was seemingly on his way to the upper-echelon of world golf.

But in October 2011, LaCava abruptly jumped ship, leaving Johnson and going to work with Tiger Woods. It was a huge gamble that took two years to pay off.

In October 2011, Woods was at rock bottom. He had just finished a brutal summer, missing the cut in the PGA Championship, and he hadn't won a tournament since his mistress scandal exploded two years earlier.

In addition, he had just had a very public breakup with long-time caddie Steve Williams.

So basically, LaCava ditched one of the most promising young players in the sport and hitched his wagon to an aging, perpetually-injured fallen star who hadn't won anything in years.

He said at the time (via ESPN):

"Johnson is a great player and a great kid. He was fantastic to me. He couldn't have been any nicer. He played great. The guy won a tournament, finished second, finished fourth in four months. The kid can play. There's no comparison between the two as far as that, it's just that it's Tiger Woods.''

LaCava's faith that Tiger Woods would once again be Tiger Woods paid off.

Now Tiger is the No. 1 player in the world again. He has six wins in 2012-13, while Johnson has two.

By all accounts, LaCava is a laid-back, professional guy. He worked for Fred Couples for years, and you rarely seem him make any news whatsoever (unlikely Williams).

But he made a big professional gamble by picking Woods over Johnson, and now he's looking mighty smart. According to the New York Times, caddies get 10% of their boss' prize money if they win, 8% if they come in the top 10, and 6% if they make the cut. Tiger finished 2nd in winnings last year with $6.1 million (Johnson made $3.3 million), and he's 2nd in winnings this year with $2.6 million (Johnson has made $1.3 million).

So he made the right move.

Tiger Woods Sent Rory McIlroy A Vulgar Motivational Text Message This Morning

Tiger Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational yesterday to reclaim the No. 1 spot in the world golf rankings.

This morning, he sent a text message to fellow Nike golfer and former world #1 Rory McIlroy to get him motivated for the next few weeks.

From Jason Sobel at Golf Channel:

It's been a generally awful start to the year for McIlroy. But he played really well in his last competitive round (a final-round 65 at Doral), so maybe he'll turn things around at the Houston Open this week.

Tiger and Rory appeared in a Nike commercial earlier this year. But this is the first sign that they actually have some sort of friendship.

Let's hope there's more of this:

Here's Phil Mickelson hitting a flop shot over Roger Cleveland, the golf club designer at Callaway.

Cleveland is a club-length away from Phil (~35 inches), but he opens the club face and pops it straight over Cleveland's head.

Impressive. Skip to the 45-second mark for the shot (via Golf Digest):

Here he is doing the same thing in 2009. The video quality isn't as good, but it's in slo-mo so you can really see how the ball moves:

Tiger Woods Is Once Again Dominating Because He Is Putting Better Than Ever

In five PGA Tour events this season, Tiger Woods has three wins and is once again on top of the World Golf Rankings. And while many won't believe Tiger is back until he wins a major, in some respects, he is actually playing better than ever.

So far this season, Woods has gained 1.48 strokes each round on the average golfer just with his putter (Strokes Gained-Putting). That is easily the best mark on the PGA Tour this season, and the highest mark of his career since the stat began being tracked in 2004. His previous high was 0.87 strokes in 2009, the season before his personal life fell apart. And in 2010, that number fell all the way to -0.03, the only year he was a below-average putter.

The result of his newfound putting dominance is a career-low in 3-putt frequency (1.39%) and a career-high 64.29% birdies or better on par-5s. So yeah, Tiger is back, and he is doing it with the putter...

The Guy Who Gave Tiger Woods A Putting Lesson Before His Hot Streak Is Now The Hottest Guru In Golf

$

tiger woods steve stricker

Ever since PGA Tour veteran Steve Stricker gave him an hour-long putting lesson three weeks ago, Tiger Woods has been on fire.

He won at Doral and Bay Hill, and his solid putting was the main reason.

So what exactly did Stricker do?

According to Dave Shedloski of Golf Digest, he just told Tiger to tweak the angle of his putter. He explained, "The ball was forward and his hands were back, and he was missing it both ways and having trouble with distance control."

The lesson has taken on a life of its own after Tiger's two wins, and now Stricker says players are coming from left and right for advice. He told the Golf Channel:

“I've had three, four, five guys come by today and ask if they could get a putting lesson. I'm hearing it all over the place.”

Another putting guru, Dave Stockon Sr., told Stricker that he shouldn't be so public about giving guys lessons. But Stricker seems pleased that Tiger gave him a shout out after winning, even if it means other players are now hounding him (via Golf Channel):

"We've talked putting a lot before and whether something really clicked this time for him, I don't know. I mean, he seemed happy when I left him on that Wednesday, and to throw me a bone like did he at the end of the tournament, it was very nice. He doesn't do that very often, so that was nice. I didn't see that coming."

Stricker is still ranked 8th in the world, so he might regret creating a monster if Tiger's game really takes off over the next few months.

But for now he seems grateful that he's getting so much credit for Tiger's resurgence.

Earlier this week Callaway released a video of Phil Mickelson hitting a wild flop shot over a guy standing 35 inches in front of him.

It turns out Phil is something of a trick-shot master. In these videos from a few years ago, he hits a bunker shot onto the green while facing the opposite direction.

Here's it is from a head-on angle:

Yesterday Jason Dufner went to a charity event for the Salesmanship Youth & Family Centers outside Dallas.

While he was meeting with the kids, someone at the event snapped this embarrassing photo of him slumped on the ground, and Deadspin got hold of it:

After that, a meme was launched: Duferning. It's like Tebowing or planking, and it involves slumping yourself against a wall and looking sad.

Fellow golfer Keegan Bradley got it going on Twitter, and a bunch of other player posted their own "Duferning" photos.

Dufner explained himself on Twitter, "What can I say, I was tired, my back hurt from sitting on the floor, and we were talking about relaxation and focusing."

But that didn't stop his fellow pros from mocking him.

Phil Mickelson Hits Two Balls At Once In Yet Another Ridiculous Trick Shot

phil mickelson trick shot sand

Phil Mickelson hit a crazy flop shot over a guy standing 35 inches in front of him earlier this week.

We've been watching YouTube videos of Lefty hitting trick shots ever since. We can't get enough of them.

In this one, he lines up two balls in the bunker and hits them at the same time. The first one goes into the lip of the bunker, the second one hits the green and zips all the way back into the bunker on some crazy backspin. So he hits two balls, but they both stay in the bunker, and he doesn't have to move to retrieve them.

No idea what the point of this is, but it's amazing:

A Danish Golfer Took Off His Pants To Hit A Shot Out Of The Water

It is not unusual for a player to take off his shoes and socks, and roll up his pants in order to hit a ball sitting in shallow water. But Danish golfer Andreas Harto took it a step further when he took off his pants and hit a shot out of the water while wearing just his shirt and boxers.

Harto was able to save bogey and finished tied for 15th in the European Tour event in Morocco.

But the most awkward moment comes after the shot, when Harto, in the midst of drying off, realizes he needs to mark his ball on the green. Rather than put his pants back on, Harto jogs over to his ball, marks it, and jogged back off, all while still in his underwear. Here's the video (via Devil Ball Golf)...

Tiger Woods Is Such A Control Freak He Replaces Furniture In Houses He Rents With His Own So He Feels Comfortable, Says ESPN (NKE)

Tiger Woods is a bit of a detail freak, says Rick Reilly at ESPN.com.

In a column bashing Woods and Nike for its ad that says "Winning Takes Care of Everything," Reilly drops this allegation:

He's a detail demon down to the tips of his shoelaces. If he rents your house for a tournament, he allegedly has all of your furniture taken out and duplicates of his own brought in, so he feels at home.

Because Woods is such a control freak, Reilly thinks there's no way he didn't approve this ad:

Bubba Watson's One-Of-A-Kind Hovercraft Golf Cart Cost $20,000

bubba watson hovercraft golf cart

Earlier this week, a video of Bubba Watson driving around a golf course in a hovercraft golf cart went viral.

He drove over water hazards and sand traps, and everyone concluded that hovercraft golf carts are a genius idea.

Now we have more information about the video from Ira Boudway of Business Week.

It turns out that the video was a piece of marketing from Oakley, and they never intended to actually make hovercraft golf carts a thing.

The main points:

  • Oakley was behind the video and came up with the idea of make a hovercraft golf cart
  • The vehicle was a modified version of a hovercraft that costs $16,000-$20,000 before any customization
  • Oakley and Neoteric (the company they paid to make the hovercraft) never intended to mass produce and sell the vehicles, but since the video went viral Neoteric has gotten "150" phone calls from people seriously wanting to buy them

The video, again:

He rakes in more than $55 million per year, and he spends it on some unreal boats and houses.

Even though he's been down, he's still rolling in money.

First thing's first, let's take a look at where Tiger's money comes from. He has made $104 million on the course in his career

Source: PGA

But the real money comes off the course. Of the $59 million he made last year, $55 million came from endorsements

His biggest deal is with Nike. While estimates vary, reports say he gets paid between $10 million and $20 million per year

Tiger Woods Once Owned A Tricked-Out Golf Cart With Spinner Wheels

$

tiger woods driving golf cart

In light of last week's video of Bubba Watson driving a hovercraft golf cart, here's an anecdote that we had totally forgotten about: Tiger Woods once owned a tricked-out golf cart.

Hank Haney, Tiger's old swing coach, wrote in his book last year that the cart had, "spinner wheels with a TW logo, a stereo system, and a top speed of 28 miles per hour."

That's twice the speed of a normal golf cart.

Haney coached Tiger from 2004 to 2010. It's unclear when Tiger owned the cart, or if he still has it.

It sounds awesome, and we fully support any attempt to make golf carts more exciting.

Still, it pales in comparison to Bubba's hovercraft golf cart:

This Close-Up Of The Fairway At Augusta Is The One Of The Best Pictures Of Grass You'll Ever See

Augusta National is defined by its impeccably manicured grounds. The course is closed for in the hot summer months, and come time for the Masters there's barely a single pine straw out of place.

This morning at his press conference, Rory McIlroy even said it takes time to convince yourself that its okay to take a divot on one of Augusta's carpet-like fairways.

David Tindall of Sky Sports tweeted out a photo of the first fairway, and it gives you an idea of what Rory is talking about.

How Augusta National, One Of The World's Great Golf Courses, Has Been Radically Altered Through The Years

$
0
0

augusta national golf club

In Tiger Woods' first nine Masters tournaments as a pro, he won four times. In the last seven attempts, he hasn't won once.

What's changed? Well, the public found out that he was a serial cheater on his wife and his life fell apart. He's also changed his caddie and he's changed his swing.

In addition to all that, Augusta National, home of the Masters, was significantly altered in 2002 and 2006 in an effort to "Tiger-proof" the course.

Augusta National used to be a wide open course that let players bomb their drivers, then hit great recovery shots if they missed the fairway. That was part of the fun of the place.

When Woods dismantled the course, the people running the tournament lengthened it, planted new trees, and grew rough.

Illustrator Chris O'Reilly drew up changes to Augusta National through the years for Golf Digest a few years back. He gave us permission to re-run some the illustrations.

We're going to use them to show you how the course has changed.

As a reminder of why the course was altered, here's Tim Rosaforte in 1997 describing Woods at Augusta National:"Woods reduced this once mighty track to an executive course. He was reaching the par 5s with wedges and driving it pin-high at the 360-yard third. All he did was go 18 under, set the tournament record, win by 12 strokes and turn Augusta into Indian Wells."

Woods was just the first of a generation of long hitters aided by improvements in technology. If Augusta wasn't made longer, the course would be a joke for pros.

The first changes in 2002 didn't really work. He won twice after those changes. The second changes in 2006 worked. He hasn't won since.

Here's a run down of a few holes.

HOLE NUMBER TWO

Here's the second hole, a par-5. As you can see, through the years trees have been grown along the right edge making shots that slide out right, more problematic. The green has also been narrowed, making approaches more difficult.

Augusta National Hole 2

HOLE NUMBER THIRTEEN

And here's the famous thirteenth hole, the final part of "Amen Corner". It's a dog leg left. As you can see, through the years, the fairway has narrowed and trees have been grown on the right side. Also, take a look at the tee box in the back, and how it's been pushed further and further back.

augusta national hole 13

HOLE NUMBER SEVENTEEN

Golf blogger Geoff Shackleford recently noted that when Jack Nicklaus won in 1986, he pulled his drive left on 17. Because there were no trees in the way, he was able to fire at the green. If the trees that exist today existed then, he would have been forced to punch a wedge out, then approach the green. We would have never heard the famous "Yes, sir!" call from Verne Lundquist as he nailed a birdie putt and went on to win.

Augusta National Hole 17

HOLE NUMBER FIFTEEN

And finally, here's the 15th hole. This is another par-5. It's been made longer through the years. When Tiger Woods first came to Augusta, he could bomb a drive and hit a short iron in. Now it requires an accurate tee shot, then a nerve wracking long iron, or fairway wood.

Augusta National Hole 15
